Germany Marked 25th of Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

On the 9th of November, 2014, Germany experienced the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall that separated Germany into a communist East Germany and West Germany from 1961 to 1989 which was the powerful symbol of the victim of the Cold War. There are still bricks of the wall left for the memory of the time. On this day, German Chancellor Angela Markel visited the place and put roses on the remaining sections of the wall, and later has said, “ The fall of the Berlin Wall has shown that dreams can come true and nothing has to stay as it is”.

Even though it has already been 25 years since the wall was destroyed and people say that they have forgotten it, nevertheless it still stays true that there are people feeling uneasy about traveling to the East. In an interview conducted by ODN with a man who had grown up in the West, he said “ It is bit weird, isn’t it? It’s bit strange, but we all have gotten used to it, but as I was born in West, it is still weird just to go to the East”. It is quite easy to imagine how astonishing it was to be able to go across the borderline where approximately 136 people died trying to escape from the East to the west due to the accidental and illegal actions done by the guards of the wall.

The construction of the Berlin Wall started on August 13th in 1961 for the sake of stopping people from fleeing to West Germany from East Germany, which was occupied by the Soviet Union back in time. It is still a memorable moment that John F. Kennedy, the president of the United States gave a speech “Ich bin ein Berliner” in West Berlin on 2nd of June in 1963 delivered to more than 450,000 people.
Two thousand years ago, the proudest boast was civis romanus sum [“I am a Roman citizen”]. Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is “Ich bin ein Berliner!”… All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words “Ich bin ein Berliner!

There had been a number of movies and TV documentaries made based on this factual event and still keeps touching million of lives nowadays. It is said about 3.5 million people migrated from East to West Germany before the beginning of construction in 1961 which sums up to 20% of total population of East Germany, and 0.5 million did the same between 1961 to 1988 in the hope of finding better living standards.

There are still many people that have been suffering from threats to their human rights in different forms. People are persecuted on the basis of religion, race, gender and more even in today’s world as the same way German people were treated. As Mrs. Markel delivered a speech to those in need of helps for human rights: “We can change things for the better. This is the message for… Ukraine, Iraq and other places where human rights are threatened”, let’s hope that people in these situations can break away from these threatening and fear just like Germans made it happen in 1989.

What is RedDeer International?

Many of you might already have heard of the name, but have no idea what this thing is all about. Thus, we decided to provide detailed information about our group, RedDeer International.

What is RedDeer International

RedDeer International is the platform where my (Hi, I’m Fumiya Akashika) international peers can voice their interests ranging from politics, environment, economy, culture, travel, and more to the world. It provides not only articles but also sounds (via Sound Cloud) and videos (via Youtube). This group’s main function is writing articles by researching issues and topics and interviewing  people that the writer would like to know about. However, like any other news based website, we conduct talk shows and create music related content such as skits by using contemporary music found on Sound Cloud, and we also shoot videos and post them on Youtube.

RedDeer International has now more than 10 writers from all around the world such as Japan, India, Finland, Bolivia, the U.S., China, Libya, Croatia, Great Britain, the Philippines and more. Our motto is to provide news and information as purely as possible. We remain committed to having our contributors write on the countries that they are from and the countries they have visited to provide more accurate and culturally sensitive information.

2.History of RedDeer International

RedDeer International was originally launched by Fumiya Akashika with Bob Cal  in Tampa, Florida on the 21st of May in 2014 in hopes of spreading  knowledge and interests on the variety of topics discussed on the site. Since Fumiya was keen on writing articles and research papers and Bob was working at CNN as a journalist, they both agreed on the idea by creating their own blog/website on WordPress. This was Fumiya’s first endeavor to create such an organization that provides articles and news; therefore, it was nothing short of a difficult task to conduct. We published the very first article on the following day.

On 23 May 2014, we launched the Facebook page for RedDeer International, and on 26 May we launched the Twitter page for RedDeer International. In the first week of launching both pages, we only obtained no more than 50 followers on both pages. Notwithstanding, the Facebook page had 20,513 followers/likes as of 10 October and 6,941 followers on Twitter. RedDeer International was struggling with gaining page likes on both social networks at the beginning; however, the efforts we made culminated day by day which led to having the number of followers we have nownow. Fumiya started investing his money and time after his arrival back in Japan after studying in the US.

On 7th of June, we launched our Sound Cloud page with our first so called Podcast that explains  differences in values, cultures and societies in the U.S, Japan and the Philippines. It was the first time for both of us to publish our voices in public through social media and, to be honest, it was not that smooth-sailing. We struggled to polish and improve the quality of contents for Soundcloud. As a result, the very first publication on the platform ended up sounding like just kids playing around.

RedDeer International has 12 pages on WordPress, including our main website, http://reddeerinternational.com. However, it started with only this one page.  The topics you can find on the site are: Politics, People, History, Environment, Economy, Travel, Podcast, Music, Culture, Job, Life, and our main topic “Nations” as of 10 October 2014.

3. Why RedDeer International?

RedDeer International was founded by 21 year-old Fumiya Akashika after his experiences of being an exchange student in the U.S twice and meeting people from around the world who had different values, cultures and ideas. He attracted people not only around his age but also those who are older than him through a non-stop perseverance.

The main point is that RedDeer International is not a group of professionals in writing, but a group of those who are young and passionate about spreading their ideas and interests around the world. That is why writers can write whatever they want to write based on their interests without any restrictions. For the most part, our articles are fun and thought provoking to read. There is no burden for writers when it comes to voicing their inner voices to the world.

Another unique quality of RedDeer is the attractiveness and freshness of our articles. We do not have any particular types of format in writing: we have articles that range from being based in research to being based in unique personal experience. As you read through some of the articles, you can feel a certain energy in the writing that we believe makes RedDeer unique.

Finally, RedDeer is an international platform run by the youth of today. It is not a platform tied with conservative and old-dated ideas that you can see everywhere on other news-based websites. We are the ones who will create business and explore the world in the next era of history. Our viewpoints come from a wide variety of backgrounds, giving a globally minded perspective of the world.

5.Introduction to RedDeer International Branches

RedDeer International so far has 12 branches. Each one of the branches provides news and information that spices up your life and is fun to read that are connected to the other branches: RedDeer International, RDI Culture, RDI History, RDI Great People, RDI Economy, RDI Entertainment, RDI Politics, RDI Podcast, RDI Music, RDI Life, RDI Travel,RDI Job and RDI English Learning. Each one of them has a purpose just like any other website. We would like to introduce a few of them for beginners of RedDeer International.

1.RedDeer International (Main Webpage) Nations Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 2.59.36 AM

The purpose of this Website is to let readers get to know about nations before reading any news articles. It is one thing to just read and look over any kind of articles, but it is another thing to know about the nations first and read news articles relevant to the nation/country. It is better to know about the country before you read news about the country! It will give you some hints of what, why and how with regards to the country of interest.

RedDeer International (Main Webpage) Nations is full of content that is written by those who have been to the countires or were born in the specific coutnry. For Instance, I have been to the U.S. and Dominican Republic before and I was born in Japan, so if I were to write about nations here, I would only write about Japan, the U.S and Dominican Republic since I know what it feels like to be there. We are hoping that this will inspire richer and more fruitful articles.

Here is a sample article on RedDeer International Nations: Japan

2. RedDeer International Culture Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 3.11.12 AM

The Purpose of this website is to provide information oriented to world cultures. How many cultures and traditions exists and are waiting for us to discover them? Nobody knows. However, if you are thinking about going abroad or doing business outside of your home country, you can not avoid the situation where you have to make business conversation or small talk. To make it smooth, you need to know at least where the people of a particular country are coming from. Culture is based on characteristics, personalities, attitudes, and most importantly inherent qualities found within a person.

RedDeer International Culture is mostly mix of research and experiences of member’s through interactions with others with diverse background. If anything comes up in our minds, any questions form as we ponder cultures, then we will certainly write about it.

Here is a sample article of RedDeer International Culture: Why do people Discriminate?

3.RedDeer International history   Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 3.15.34 AM

The purpose of this website is to provide  astonishing and inconceivable facts of history. There is proverb that goes “History will repeat itself“. It is true in all expects. World War II took place even though all the leaders (most of) assembled and established the U.N out of regret of causing WWI. Mankind surely learned some lessons and tried not to conduct such a blunder again. The bottom line is that it does not matter where you were born and come from; events happened in history all over the world and contain valuable lessons for all of us. You can apply them to your life.

Here is a sample article of RedDeer International History: 69 years has past since the world war 2 ended

4.RedDeer International Politics Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 3.17.26 AM

The purpose of this website is to deliver the news and matters which are politically related to the world based on our interests. It can be said that future leaders will be able to grow and develop via online writing and idea sharing. And this trend is speeding up year by year. There is no time like the present to know about  what things around the world are going on. Grasp the key information to succeed in this hectic world!

RedDeer International Politics deals with Education, Politics, War, Regulations and Laws, Riots, etc. Anything related to social affairs will be written in this Branch.

Here is a sample article of RedDeer International Politics: Top 5 riots of 2014

5.RedDeer International Great people of the world Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 3.15.05 AM

The purpose of this website is to let readers have time and chance to attach themselves to those who are working toward their dreams. We would like to make readers inspired by reading articles about talented, skilled and hard working people around the world. It does not matter if you are famous/well known – those who are working toward their dreams who never give up with a positive attitude are beautiful and worth knowing.

RedDeer International Great People of the World is composed of articles with exclusive interviews with those talented people we approach. For instance, our first article in this branch is the article with an exclusive interview with Lydia Canaan, the first rock star and humanitarian activist of the United Nations. She has had ups and downs in life. It is always motivational to get to know those people and learn some lessons from them!

Here is a sample article of RedDeer International Great People of the World: Lydia Canaan:Passion for Music and Humanity.

As you become a member, you will receive a position as a writer and likely receive the benefit out of our works later when we start gaining profits. We are not just bunch of students/today’s youth but group of individuals making each day count.

Writing is an art. You can create your own world, expressing affairs and interests in your words that will apply to people’s lives in many ways. New Edition “RedDeer Voices ” coming soon

I am Fumiya Akashika, the president of RedDeer International. This time I would like to make an announcement on behalf of the members of our team.

Date: August 8, 2014

From: Fumiya Akashika (on behalf of RedDeer International)

To:  Readers

  1. Reason why I created  this site
  2. How this blog works

I have been connected with great people throughout my life since I was child. This blog title will be “Great People of the world”. “So who are the great people?” When I ask you all these question, many of you might name a lot of famous and rich people such as Michael Jackson, Will Smith, Eminem, or Albert Einstein . These people are truly great. They archived  their dreams and goals by making all out efforts and working hard on all fronts. They have encountered a lot of challenges and difficulties in their lives, but they picked themselves up time and time again, honing their crafts and starting again from scratch when an error was made. That is why they succeeded.

However, I would like to say that Great People are not only these iconic people but also those who are working toward their dreams and objects day by day. There are a lot of people in this world who are struggling and trying to make it to where they want to be. And it does not matter whether or not they are well-known, these people who are working on their dreams and aspirations are beautiful and awesome (in my language). They are truly worthy to be known by people all around the world, as they have abilities to attract and touch millions of people’s lives. Those people who are walking and working toward their goals have a special aura that is different from others, and life has a special kind of meaning to them.

<Why I decided to create this blog>

With one and only one reason, I made up my mind to create this blog.

I have been a boy who was so passionate and motivated  (according to people around me and me as well), and had always ambitions and dream in my mind, which were, most of time, made fun of and rejected by so many people. They told me:

That is impossible and unrealistic. You have to get back to  reality instead of running toward and dreaming about things you are passionate about“,

What kind of skills do you have to archive the goal, how are you going to get money to keep doing what you want sustainably? You have nothing, just live a life as it is“.

I was sick and tired of hearing those words. It was much more harmful when I was told the same thing by the one I was truly counting on and the one who I wanted to push me toward the goal. I felt that I had to live a life giving up on my dreams, aspirations and inventions that were buzzing in my mind.

When I was the most depressed, fortunately, I met this guy who is now the one of members of RedDeer International, Bobu. He was clearly passionate and always had a concrete dream in his mind. He told me:

Do not listen to those who are discouraging you, they do not realize what people are capable of and what potential people have, and they do not understand you

He told me also:

Go for your dream and believe in yourself, if there is nobody out there who believes in you, who else is going to believe you? It is you.

Because of him, I am now who I am, doing what I love to do. Because of him, I could overcome a depression and slump that anchored me down. Because of him, I feel that I am the capable being I am and that I can start to believe in myself.  Of course, I am not sure what is lurking around the corner, but I believe in myself and that pushes me to where I want to be even when I am in slump and feel lonely.

Will Smith says:

You have to believe in yourself in the first place, since then decide who you are going to be ,and what you are going to do for your dream.

I know how powerful it is to have people like Bobu in my life in order to go for my dream. I believe that if you want to keep motivated and passionate about whatever you are doing, it is for the best to get to know those who are motivated and passionate, and connect yourself with them. It is just one of many ways to enhance your life, but I believe it helps you to think about your life and dreams.

And that is why I created this blog. I am sure that many of you are worried and unsure about your life, and keep asking yourself “What if”. To those people, I would like to introduce you to other people who are successful and passionate in their lives, and who are running toward their dreams, and I would also like you to attach yourself to those people in a variety of ways. I believe that it will help you to keep feeling motivated, and it also will give you aspiration, inspiration, hope , dreams and an idea of what human beings ( you ) are capable of.

<How this blog works>

As I mentioned, great people are not the only people who are famous; great people are always around you.

We will write articles about those who have been working on their dreams and accomplished their goals and dreams by getting contact with them to deliver articles as genuinely as possible.

This is an extreme example, but we would write about our  parents , and our sisters and brothers since they are so passionate and we truly respect  what they are doing, and at the same time, we would write about those who are well-known. It is not that they are famous but those who achieved their dreams and goals, and are admired by people are those who have been through difficulties and challenges in their lives.

We will treat everybody (it does not matter what background they have)  as an individual; as the one who has been working toward their dreams.

I hope this blog will give you motivation, hopes, dreams , aspirations and inspirations, and the power to push yourself and believe in yourself.

Greatness is not this wonderful, esoteric, illusive God like feature that only the special among us will ever take. It is something that truly exists in all of us

By Will Smith

Thank you,

Sincerely yours,

Fumiya Akashika, the president of RedDeer International

Dominican Republic

Hi I am Fumiya Akashika. I am not living in Dominican Republic, however I have been to Santo Doming once before, therefor I would like to write little bit of overview of Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic is home for more than 9,400,000 people , located right next to Cuba to the right ( and is only 1 and half hours away from Miami in Florida, the U.S. by an airplane) ,surrounded beautiful oceans which are Carribean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is Santo Domingo where is placed along south cost. This country is known for the first european permanent settlement in the America since Christopher Columbus landed there back in 1492. However there were people who had alreaDominicanRepublicOMCdy inhabited in the land from 7th century way before European settler came, and they were called Taino. As For the official language they speak, it is Spanish , and this can be explained by the fact that Spanish settler ruled this land for almost 3 centuries up until 1821 when Dominican Republic finally became an independent nation.

A Religious they believe in is mostly Roman Catholic which 95 % of total population is engaging themselves in. If you want to get to know more about Roman Catholic please click below.

Roman Catholic

Dominican republic is 9th largest economic country in Latin America and 2nd largest in the carribean region. Its economy was depended on agriculture and mining for a long time, however now it is replaced to Service of more than 64.7 % of total labor force whereas there are only 5% of it engaging in agriculture as of 2012.  It does seem to be getting better, but in the same breath, more than 2,000,000 people live in below poverty line. In addition to that, young people who are between 15 to 24 years-old, are having trouble finding a job, and it is said that unemployment rate for those people are 30.3% where 44 % of total unemployment rate are consist of female.

When it comes to trading, Dominican republic has strong bound with the U.S., importing 45% of all the commodity from the U.S. and 46% of all the exporting commodities are sent to the U.S., which can be interpreted that Economy of Dominican Republic may be depended on the U.S. to some extents. They are mainly exporting things such asferronickel, sugar, gold, silver, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, meats, consumer goods, and importing stuffs such as foodstuffs, petroleum, cotton and fabrics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Speaking of currency, they use Dominican Peso, however a lot of people accept American Dollar especially around airports, at least when I went there, they took away my dollars without asking me if I had Dominican Peso.

There is no place like Dominican Republic when it comes to culture, then how is it different and unique? well, the point is,REST_bandera3 because of its historical background, its culture is mixture of Native Indians Taino, Europeans and Africans. The most notable culture that should be mentioned is its food along with baseball. La Bandera,  is the most common food in Dominican Republic ,foods made with rice, red beans.

As for sport, Dominican republic is well known for its powerful and strong identification for baseball. it is always true that they are considered as one of the best baseball team around the world.

Throughout February until 27th of the month, they do have festival in entire nation celebrating their independence. Around this period of time, streets are covered with colorful declarations and is exciting to visit.

Place to Visit for sightseeing

There are many places you can visit in Dominican Republic, and there are also a lot of place which are not well known to foreigners.

National Palace

National palace is located in the capital city, Santo Domingo which houses the offices of the executive blanche of Dominican Republic, built back in 1944, and this building is considered the most beautiful building in Dominican Republic. There is no way you miss this one when you have oppotunity to visit this country!

Museo de las Casas Reales

Unknown Unknown-1

This palace is also one of the most important historical site in Dominican Republic, located in the capital city ,Santo Domino. This building was ordered to be made by the Spanish crown back in 1511 in order to house the main government office of the colony.

I did not enter into this building for some reasons, but there were a lot of kids and adults in this building  enjoying their times when I was there. As far as I remember, this building has more than 2 stories or just 2 stories.

There are more places to visit there not only like buildings but also natures there.

Do British police carry guns?

This is a simple question about a complex and controversial topic. Historically, use of firearms was dependent on the current situation and the nation’s temperament. In the late nineteen hundreds, night patrols were armed. By the turn of the century they were retired. Various conflicts led to officers being armed, but only those trained and the arms had to be issued by a Sergeant. During the Second World War, firearms were issued to those who protected 10 Downing Street and the Royal Family. Also officers were issued arms in case of invasion by German forces. These could not be used on the public for any reason. Post the Second World War concern was raised about the police’s role and use of arms. Over time the number of officers authorized for firearm use dropped from 17% (post-1966) to around 7% (2005). Heavy restrictions on firearms are not just for the police – there are numerous weapons available for purchasing in the US that are illegal to own in the UK. The list in its entirety may be seen in the Firearms Act of 1968.

The increase of registrations by officers is seen in the 1960s due to the high amount of police killings. One of the most infamous examples is the Massacre of Baybrook Street (i.e Shepherd’s Bush murders). Three officers and two others were killed by three criminals after the men were questioned about the lack of a taxi disk. However, after a number of people from the public were killed by police in the 1980s led to the increased restrictions and the drop in officers licensed leading to the low numbers seen today.

Unfortunately, there will sometimes be a need for armored police action. There are Armed Response Vehicles (ARVs). Molded after a system developed in West Yorkshire, they were first introduced to London in 1991. ARVs are clearly marked, specially adapted, and modified for their tasks. Each member carries a Glock handgun and the boot holds two 9mm Heckler & Koch MP5 semi-automatic submachine guns and a Heckler-Koch GC36C assault rifle. However, these are the exception, not the rule. As a standard (excluding Northern Ireland) most UK police do not carry firearms of lethal capacity. According to government figures in 2009 there are 6, 868 officers authorized to use firearms in England and Wales.

Officers do have alternatives to shooting suspects with lethal rounds. These are called “less lethal technologies”. The first is the taser. The Taser X26 has been in use in the UK since 2004. It has a 94% rate of effectiveness and is considered a stun weapon to be used in final resort. The second category is impact rounds. L60A1 Attenuating Energy Projectile (AEP) is in use and has replaced the L21AI baton round and “rubber bullets” (first used in NI in 1973). AEPs are used “to dissuade or prevent a potentially violent person from their intended course of action and thereby neutralise the threat” according to Acop guidelines. These are known for their heavy use during riots, but have also be used on suspects carrying “carrying knives, swords and even firearms”. Finally, chemical incapacitants (CS spray and PAVA spray) are used, but the range is quite limited.

Due to the about of other effective and non-lethal options available to the average officer, I do not think that the use of firearms will become widespread. Currently there is little interest by the police and the public. Overall, the officers do not want to carry arms as they want to “”polic[e] by consent”.

U.K. and U.S. Government System

The United States is a Republic government and the British government is a constitutional monarchy.

The constitutions are quite different. The United States of America has a singular document called The Constitution of the United States of America. The United Kingdom has no such document. The most famous governmental document is the Magna Carta. The charter contains sixty two chapters, which list the rights of and the privileges of the upper class during that time. The U.S. constitution is difficult to change. The U.S. Bill of Rights was created to add amendments to the constitution rather than change the document itself. In contrast the British constitution (i.e. Acts of Parliament) can be changed by the passage of legislation.

(Magna Carta)

The U.S. constitution has a strict separation of powers and includes the process of “checks and balances”. The powers are the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary in the American system. The British system has the Cabinet, House of Lords and Commons, and the legal system, respectively.

In each branch there a quite a few minute differences. In the executive branch, while the positions of the President and the Prime Minister sound the same, they are not. The President is directly elected through the Electoral College. The Prime Minister holds office only as long as they hold the majority of votes from the House of Commons. This would almost be comparable to members of the Congress and their party lines deciding the president. It can be argued that a prime minister holds more power than a president does – while a president may have incredible oversight, they are hobbled by the aforementioned checks and balances worked into the system. The prime minister in Britain not only heads the government but also has the majority seats in the House of Commons while they do so.

The Judicial system is much more politically motivated in America. In Great Britain there are currently three parties with a significant amount of power: Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrat. Currently the Lib Dems and the Conservatives have created a “coalition government”. This is due to the Conservatives not having a majority in 2010, so they worked about a compromise with the Lib Dems. The current PM is a Conservative and the Deputy PM is a Lib Dem. The American government is a heavy two party system (Democrat and Republican). The length of elections are vastly different- the American presidential election lasts about two years after the general primaries while the PM election lasts a manner of weeks.

Legislative choices are always important and vary wildly. In England there are three separate parts: the Crown held by the monarch, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. Together the Houses create the Parliament. The monarchy has been steadily losing power for about three hundred years. Currently, their purpose is to convene and dissolve Parliament and represent the unity of the country. For example, there is no State of the Union address but rather a Queen’s Speech. Like the monarchy, the House of Lords has decreased over time. The term is almost literal- the House is for those of title (earl, duke, marques, etc), bishops, and life peers. Their role used to be the highest court of appeal. It does a tonne of committee work – it examines/revises legislation proposed to the House of Commons and can also delay the enactment of a law from a public bill for the length of one year. The House of Commons does a fair bit as well. They discuss pending legislation and issues and are responsible for voting on bills put forward by the government or a member of the Commons. Both houses are very large- the House of Lords was roughly 800, but has been whittled to only 92. The House of Commons hosts 650 members. There are 112 ministers as well (made up of the PM, the Cabinet, and 100 other persons). The U.S. Congress is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives number at 435 and this is taken from each states’ population. The Senate has two members per state. There are three kinds of power Congress has; congressional, enumerated, and implied. Congress’ role is authority over financial matters, matters of and pertaining to war, and passing laws. Unlike Parliament, Congress is not reasonable for higher courts and voting for the President (the United States has the Supreme Court and the Electoral College, respectively).

Hello, my name is Moria Crowley. I will be guest writing on France and Great Britain for the next few weeks. Both countries are quite famous for their food, politics, entertainment, and historical impact. My articles will be a general overview of Great Britain and France with a follow-up focus on the criminal justice systems in each country. Her is France.

Bonjour? Comment ça va?  France is a large country (the largest in Europe) with many famous things about it. It is a place of food and drink and history. Here is des amuse-gueule.

[Map of France with cities]

Historical France

A long time ago France used to be known as Gaul. This was during the time that Julius Caesar won in the Gallic Wars in the year 51 BCE. The Romans kept a ton of records about the places they conquered. One thing they recoded was the three ethno-linguistic groups of the region: the Gauls, the Aquitani, and the Belgae. French, as a language, as not developed then. Instead people spoke Gallic. After the fall of the Roman Empire there was much turmoil. Almost a hundred years later Charlemagne ruled as the strongest Frankish king. He is also one of the famous. One of the most important contributions he made was the development of the kingdoms of France and Germany. After he died (after just thirteen years of ruling), France evolved into its own monarchy. The Hundred Years War was a victory for France over Britain. This lead to the death of Jeanned’Arc. She became a famous mayiter and a French champion.

After the Hundred Years War there was much turmoil. This reached a peak in the 18th century during the French Revolution (1789-99). It was governed as a Republic until was was established as an Empire by Napoleon Bonaparte. He lead France on a military campaign of French dominance for years. However, this was a drain on resources, and after his imprisonment his methods were abandoned. France fought with Great Britain and the US in World War I. The occupation of France by Nazi Germany marked the end of the Third Republic. In 1944 the Fourth Republic was established. However, it was quickly dismantled. The Fifth Republic was established in 1958 and continues today.

Modern France

France is currently on the Fifth Republic. Their constitution is the Constitution of the Fifth Republic. It was created almost entirely by General Charles de Gaulle, and as such is referred to as Gaullist. The French legal system is based in part on Justinian’s Code (Corpus Juris Civilis) and is a civil law system. An interesting fact is that France was the first modern country to legalize same-sex sexual activity. This happened in 1791. Unlike the UK, France has a president. The president’s role is to assure the county’s independence and make sure it adheres to the constitution. They also have a premier (a.k.a. prime minister). The premier is appointed by the president. They direct government operations – but the president decides policy. The Council of Members is similar in function to a cabinet government. Members are selected by the premier, approved by the president, and offer advice and opinion on important issues. The Parliament is bicameral; the Senate and the National Assembly. They are the upper and lower chambers respectively.

Famous places to visit in France
