Forgiving and Forgetting: The Science of Letting Go

The moment you reject someone for whatever reason, do you know exactly what is going on on the other person’s mind? It would be so heart-breaking…

Have you ever hurt someone or are you hurting someone?  Have you been hurt or are you hurting because of someone and something? There are always times in your life when people hurt you deliberately or unintentionally.

The moment you reject someone for whatever reason, do you know exactly what is going on on the other person’s mind? It would be so heart-breaking to you if you were them, but the truth is that unless they let you know how hurt they are, you will never know what is going on in their minds. Of course, if the one who you hurt or have been hurting is mature, then chances are that they have already forgiven you or will likely forgive you later, but one thing you have to always remember are those things you did to them will remain in their recollections, in other words, they can not forget what happened to them, what has been told and said by you.

Of course, I happened to be on both sides of this situation for better or worse before, so I can tell how easy for me it is to reject others and think that they are fine with it, and also how hard it is to forgive someone, and most importantly to forget about what they have done to me. The moment you reject someone, you feel some kind of relaxing vibe since you successfully solved the problem in your favor, and finally you are able to run after something you always wanted .

However, if those who were rejected by you were not contended with your points or were needy/clingy, then they would do whatever they could do to trouble you. Let’s say people you have rejected are mature enough to forgive you by all means, but as I mentioned already, it is still hard for them to forgive you. And chances are that they will not forget about you.

If it took place more than 5 years ago, then they might have already forgotten or at least have become indifferent about what happened to them due to you. Notwithstanding, it is not always the case. And another truth about the moment when they forgive you is that they are not over it at all by a long shot. They are in the process to rationalize the situation and try so hard to pretend that nothing has happened to them, and this is usually done so by them in order to make you feel as good about yourself as you can after your rejection so that you can move on in your life thinking that you and they had a good ending. On the other hand, they are still struggling with that situation no matter what. And time is the only thing that can heal the wounds.

I forgive a lot, but I never forget what’s said and done.

Ok, they forgave you, then what? Then they will move on to the next stage to reshape their relationship with you, and that is “Forgetting about the past”. However, this is the most and worst part of getting over the past since it is simply nearly quixotic in every sense of the word. Unless they lose their memory completely, they won’t be able to forget. This becomes more difficult as you get older.  You do not remember exactly what happened to you when you were 11 or 12 years-old, but you surely still remember what you did and what kind of people you are hanging around with when you are 20 years-old. My father (50 something) still does remember those days he had when he was an university student.  In that, you always have to be careful about what you are going to do with those who you once rejected at any level for whatever the reason.

I forgive people, but that doesn’t mean I trust them.

If you are intending to have better relations with those people afterwards, you have to carefully look in the past and try to understand how they felt back in time even if you can’t, and try not to make the same mistakes again with them, and this is the only way to enhance the relations to better quality. And another thing you have to remind yourself of always is that they lost trust and any expectations from you already. They will likely not tell you this, but this is surely the thing you have to know.

If you are not trying to get back at those people, you might as well just move on in your life forgetting about them first. You should not contact them because it only hurts them more.  And if you happen to be the one who was treated like shi# by someone who you loved once and still love, we do not know how but sometimes you just have to forget about the person and move on.

3 Reasons Why You Should Travel

If you are a teenager or twenty-someting, you have a lot of time and energy to spend on exploring the world. Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which you thought you did not fit into the society that you were in? If the answer is Yes, please proceed reading.

Photo by Josh Nezon on Unsplash

I was talking about random stuff with one of people I befriended on campus, who is from Argentina. While we are talking,  we started to talk about passions each one of us have. I explained what I had been doing for my dream, and he also talked about his goal and the way he perceived the world. Honestly, what he told me was inspiring and he offered  intriguing ideas I had never thought of up until that moment. He explained how important it is to travel the world in our lives, especially when we are young. There three reasons he excitedly told me are:

1. Abandon time to spend for ourselves unlike people in their 40s.

Photo by Josh Nezon on Unsplash

Of course, when we are 20-something, we still have freedom to some extent even though most of us start working at companies. Yet it is still believed that even if you failed on what  you are doing, you would most likely be able to start to reshape your life from scratch again if you are still 20-something . It sounds old-school cliche, but it stays true. How many elderly people already have told you to do the thing you love the most? Furthermore, I have heard a lot about their unrealized ideas and inventions that elderly people have been keeping in their minds for their entire lives, and they told me that they should have done it when they were young. As you can tell from regrets such as these, we simply might better living up the moment as much as we can. Traveling around the world will definitely be the one of must-dos when it comes to doing something young people can: they have the privilege to do so.

2. Know the people, know the countries, and know the world.

Photo by Omar Lopez on Unsplash

This totally depends on each individual, however if I had to say one thing, I would say that you might not want to miss the boat before it is too late to notice that you should have done it. When you travel all over the world, it is highly likely that you will encounter moments you have never expected. You cannot anticipate the challenges you will face such as visiting country that have differences in culture, values, societal function, and the way people think about their lives. And each experience you  go through actually will help you a lot to broaden your view of the outside of the world. The Argentinean man said to me ” With the experiences you would likely go through during traveling the world, you will gain another aspect of the way of life through interactions with cultures and people  there, and it will help you to figure out where is the right place for you to settle“. It does sound dramatic, however, it is human nature that some people just do not fit right in the place where they currently stay.

3. Figure out the right place to fit in

Photo by Raghu Nayyar on Unsplash

This one is actually the whole point of his talking about the way he sees the world. He does not just travel the world to have good time to take his mind off of the hectic ongoing mind game in society which wears him down, but he does travel to find a place truly for him to be able to blend in. It indeed takes time until we find a place like this, but it is worth trying in order to spend our lives happy. For instance, I live in Japan, and I do occasionally feel that I do not belong to Japanese society the way I should. Rather, I feel much more connected with American society in that I am the type of boy who clearly shows his thoughts and feelings in words to people. He articulated the point by saying, “And this can be only done when you are young“.

Why don’t you consider these three points,  pack your stuff and get out of your country. When you come back, you might become a totally different person more than you can imagine now.  You are not belonging to a country, you are belonging to the world!

Me Time and Me Space: Loving yourself is the first step to loving others

Who are you? What do you want to do? Who do you want to be with? What encourages you? What are you pursuing? And what do you know about yourself?

I was sick in the morning when I finally got out of my bed. Regardless of what I felt, I went out of my house to the school I have been going for four years. I rode my scooter to the subway station. It was only 5:50am; everyone is still sleeping in their beds usually when I get on the subway. It was silent, but there were a lot of noises scattering around in my head. I was thinking about everything that had been stressing me out to the point I felt I just wanted to be alone.

It took me two and half hours to get to my university, but it was nothing hectic since I had been doing this for almost three years so far. When I arrived at my university, I immediately took my feet to a class room where I had to give the last presentation in my entire college life in 10 minutes.  I sat on the one of chairs randomly ordered in the room. I wasn’t thinking about the presentation, but thinking about something else.

As time ticked away, I was gradually feeling like throwing up and got a severe stomachache which I have never felt in my life or at least since I got into the University. Even with the sickness, I completed my 90 minutes presentation like nothing was wrong with me. Everyone in the room gave it up for me, and asked me questions related to the topic I delivered the speech about.

I went out to the bathroom right after the presentation, and I literally  said to the man in the mirror “Who are you?”.  It was me, but was not me. I did not feel that I was looking at myself, rather, I was looking at someone else I was not familiar with. My face was so pale, no smile, no nothing. On top of the weird feeling, my stomach flipped upside down intensely, and I threw up. In that, I went to see my doctor who told me that I was under too much stresses and I needed to take a break from everything I had to deal with.

Now that I think about it, I was under so much pressure, and having all the sorts of thoughts at the same time. I was thinking about school, my job, relationships, my passion, death of a loved one and more. If I had a dollar for every time I list thoughts I had in my head, I would have been a millionaire. Especially the relationship part had been the one of troubles constantly bothering me most of the days over the last 10 months.

I was loosing myself. I did not feel any confidence in myself whereas I used to have too much confidence in myself.

I was loosing myself to the obsessive thoughts and my characteristic of being strict and harsh on myself. Thus, I decided to be alone. I decided to be alone in my own world where nobody can possibly intervene with me or come bother me: “Me time and Me space“.

I stopped hanging out with anyone, cancelled all the appointments I had with others, and most importantly, even stopped communicating with my best buddy. However, this had to be done to heal myself and regain the confidence in myself I used to have. I needed to take care of myself first to take care of others well enough to make them feel good.

Speaking of relationships, I have been having obsessive thoughts and feelings about a girl, but I was trying to move on, shutting down all the communication means I could use to interact with her, and I gradually started to get myself back on the right track. I started to see girls I was interested in, and they were fantastically smart, full of compassion and beautiful, which I need the most for a girl in my life. Even with the thought, there was a feeling lingering up in my head  “I do not think I can love them the same way I loved the girl I am still having feelings for”. However, I was trying to move on and make some changes in my life by doing something I knew that was meaningless.

The day I went to the hospital to see my doctor, I had an appointment with a girl I had been seeing, but she cancelled it on me. It hurt, but in the same breath, it was good for me because deep down in the back of my mind, all the time I knew that she was not the one I truly wanted, but I was justifying to myself that she could be the one at the same time.  If she had come, I would have definitely kept lying to myself and her as well, and I was also feeling sorry for her in that I had been wasting her time just to hang out with me. It was not fair to her since I used her in order to kill my loneliness. That was a trigger of my canceling all the meetings I had with others. They asked me why, but I never replied to them…

I needed “Me time and Me space” to clear up my thoughts and define what I wanted to get in my life and what I wanted to accomplish. I needed to take care of myself first to take care of others better. I needed to love myself just like I used to do.

All the people on the earth are only human beings, in other words, even they say they are tough, they are not. We are all fragile and cannot bear extreme stresses and pressures from outside. It is better if you have someone who you can trust and who trusts you enough to support you throughout tough times, but that is not that case most of the time. We need time to love and take care of ourselves.

I finally faced my inner voice that had been telling me the exact the same thing  from the beginning of all the struggles up to now. When it comes to the point you ca not have any room for anything, all the opinions and perspectives others have to suggest you do not matter to you anymore.

And I also rekindled my passion to write articles which always help me to be relaxed and happy.

What I have learned through having “me time and space” is that I can not love more than two people at the same time, and even If do, it makes me sick to death. Furthermore, I noticed that time I have troubles with myself, I became weaker and weaker to the point where I can not have decent relationships not only with girls but also with my best friend. I believe that when those who are true to themselves and take care of themselves well finally meet one another, they will have a great relationship and truly respect each other without having any kind of fears or regrets.

I’m still in the healing process, but at least now I have been regaining what I need to complete myself, and start believing in myself again, and this is because I decided to talk to myself and take care of myself first despite the fact I have many people I would like to take care of first.

You need to love yourself in order to love others well, and it is your job to take care of yourself always.

Take action and life will respond to it accordingly

It is crucial to know how our choices and actions impact our lives later in the future. Regardless of your age, when you look back at the past, occasionally we feel we came a long way in all respects. Numerous events have taken place that basically created who you are now. It can be very valuable to rethink about how important it is to take actions accordingly to make great impact on your life.

For example, my father, who 53 years old, works at a life insurance company, has been through many tough events in his lifetme. One time, I luckily had a conversation with him,  which usually does not happen at all since we rarely see each other due to the daily schedules we have. He told me that he had slept in and been late for his work, which would later have a great effect on my life, and that’s why he finally was determined to admit that he would like to quit his  job. And so, he told the president of the company. On that day, he had a meeting, which was one of the important chores he had to manage because of his position in the company. Day after the day, the president told him to gather employees and clean up the room for him by 8:30 am. My father woke up at 8:25am, which means he totally screwed it up. After the call he received from the president, he went to the office, but was told to go back home and also was told to come to a director’s meeting on the following day to discuss what had happened and how he felt about his work and if he still wanted to work there. Therefore, he went to the meeting surrounded by the board of directors with angry looks on their faces. At the end of the meeting, they drew the conclusion that my father would have 3 months to work for the company. In addition to that, they allowed him to be absent at the work place when he was interviewing for other positions.

I was only 15 years old then and I did not know what was going on with him since my parents had never told me about this issue. After a while, my father received a call from one of his old friends about a job opportunity at Gibraltar Life Insurance Company, which was a rare opportunity that only 30 out of 2,500 people would successfully obtain. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity since the company usually doesn’t hire that number of people at a time. Thus he applied to it and as luck would have it, he aced it.

In that period of time, the company had a program for full scholarships for young people around 15 to 16 years old to be exchange students in the U.S. to encourage them to see and feel the world. The company had already done this 3 times before in the previous 3 years, and it was the 4th and last time they actually gave scholarships. They stopped the program after I came back to Japan from the U.S for some reason, which I am not still quite sure of.

It was almost the deadline for the scholarship when my father started working for the company. One day, he came back home with a brochure for the program and told me to apply to it. It was definitely the once in a lifetime opportunity for me, but it sure was a long shot at the same time due to the number of students who would be able to actually win: only 12 people. I had never thought about going to study abroad at my age of 16, however, I thought it would be a great chance in that I would be able to enrich my life and develop my English skills. Thus, I did exactly what he told me to do. Like it or not, I was just another Japanese boy who went to an average high school, but my life changed 180 degrees when I was qualified to be an exchange student for the program.

It has been already 5 years since I first went to the United States as an exchange student, and I had another opportunity to be an exchange student at the University of South Florida last year. I am now writing articles in English, having great people around me from all over the world, having my own unique view of the world around me. I am proud of myself now. However, all the things that have happened to me can boil down to the time when my father slept in and was late for his work. If the timing was slightly different or if he hadn’t been late for his work, I would not have had the chance to be an exchange student, nor would the thought of studying abroad have ever crossed my mind. In other words, his being late for his work altered my life completely from that moment on.

It is for sure that he did not sleep in on that day deliberately and that he didn’t know that he had to quit his job to give his son better life later. The point gathered is that even such small action he took unconsciously had great impact on my life in long run. Who would have thought that I would be who I am just because of his being late for work? Nobody!

Then, what if you take an action consciously for yourself while you are wide-awake? Here is what happens:

6 months ago, I founded a website called “RedDeer International”, which is the platform for youth today to voice their interests from politics to travel to the world in the form of articles. I eagerly wanted to be a journalist without any doubt back then, but hadn’t had any experiences to help me become one. I needed something that would give me writing experience and also allow me to travel and see the world. So I created this website. The bottom line is that I took the action consciously and believed in myself that I would get something meaningful later in life if I stuck to it. Finally another opportunity came into my life: one of the editors of student journal Affairs Today today showed up out of the blue, looked at the articles I had written and gave me an opportunity to be a member of the company. This happened within 5 months, which was quicker than I thought it would take.

Whatever the actions you take consciously or unconsciously will always bring you something  in the future. The only difference between taking actions when you are conscious and unconscious is the time it will take to make something happen. If you are consciously taking actions for the purpose you have within yourself, then the moment you take the action will alter your life in the future much faster. This is like an old story your grandpa would always tell you, but it truly will happen.

For most of the time, people get scared and neglect to take actions since they are not sure what will happen later or when it will happen, but what you do everyday creates who you will be later in every respect. This is another way to get to have a successful life and live your dream, but why don’t you take a moment to rethink what actions you should take to get to the point where you would like to be down the road? Because if you do make the right choices, even if it is a small thing like sleeping in and being late, it could benefit you later. It might be better idea to pay attention to the moves you make in everything you do.

Me, My Soul and the Doughnut

I was living as a monk in a Vaishnava monastery, a Hindu spiritual retreat, to be more in touch with my soul and to discover where my life is heading. I followed a rigid schedule; up at 5:00 AM, chanting and meditating for four hours, serving food, listening to lecturers and studying, I devoted all my energy towards studying Vedic texts and ancient poetry, filling my mind and consciousness with the knowledge of gurus past, slowly distancing from my association with my ego and being more in touch with the transcendental. A strict diet was enforced—vegan meals offered to the Lord—to purify our karma. I gained a great deal of knowledge from the daily studies and lectures; being in the proximity of such elevated souls encouraged me to stay focused on reaching true reality.

On my daily routine of offering, chanting, meditating and studying, I would go to the Dunk’N Donuts across the street and order an angel cream doughnut to eat—it was my way of feeling the familiarity of my material life, appeasing my homesickness.

One day, a yogi at the monastery said to me, “Do you know that everyday at 4:00 you get a doughnut from Dunk’N Donuts?”
“Yes, I do,” I admitted.

“Try telling yourself ‘what would happen if I don’t eat the doughnut?’” suggested the yogi.

Intrigued, I asked myself that same question and a voiced screamed, “YOU WILL DIE! YOU WILL DIE IF YOU DON’T EAT THAT DOUGHNUT!”
The yogi explained to me that that was the voice of my carnal ego—the voice of my false self, the temporal identity of the physical body that wants instant gratification.

Each of us is comprised of a false ego—a mislead identification with the mind and body, and a true soul—the infinite entity that is a part of the universal consciousness. Our purpose as earthly beings is to detach from our identification with the false ego and regain consciousness of the eternal being, returning to the blissful state of the supersoul. Falling prey and listening to the voice of the carnal ego that wants that doughnut, sex or money is the mistake we all make.
B 17725
There are times in our lives when we are faced with extremely tough decisions: whether to stay in a relationship, what career to choose, how to deal with conflict. The person that wins isn’t the one who makes the most money, gets the perfect spouse or wins the argument; who knows what karmic waves those actions have pushed and what disastrous future could be coming? The person that wins is the one who can filter out the voice of the false ego from the voice of the supersoul, the voice that is more powerful than 10,000 suns.

For whatever decision you have to make in your life, discover how to filter out the clutter and reach your inner voice; you will never go wrong.

What is RedDeer International?

Many of you might already have heard of the name, but have no idea what this thing is all about. Thus, we decided to provide detailed information about our group, RedDeer International.

What is RedDeer International

RedDeer International is the platform where my (Hi, I’m Fumiya Akashika) international peers can voice their interests ranging from politics, environment, economy, culture, travel, and more to the world. It provides not only articles but also sounds (via Sound Cloud) and videos (via Youtube). This group’s main function is writing articles by researching issues and topics and interviewing  people that the writer would like to know about. However, like any other news based website, we conduct talk shows and create music related content such as skits by using contemporary music found on Sound Cloud, and we also shoot videos and post them on Youtube.

RedDeer International has now more than 10 writers from all around the world such as Japan, India, Finland, Bolivia, the U.S., China, Libya, Croatia, Great Britain, the Philippines and more. Our motto is to provide news and information as purely as possible. We remain committed to having our contributors write on the countries that they are from and the countries they have visited to provide more accurate and culturally sensitive information.

2.History of RedDeer International

RedDeer International was originally launched by Fumiya Akashika with Bob Cal  in Tampa, Florida on the 21st of May in 2014 in hopes of spreading  knowledge and interests on the variety of topics discussed on the site. Since Fumiya was keen on writing articles and research papers and Bob was working at CNN as a journalist, they both agreed on the idea by creating their own blog/website on WordPress. This was Fumiya’s first endeavor to create such an organization that provides articles and news; therefore, it was nothing short of a difficult task to conduct. We published the very first article on the following day.

On 23 May 2014, we launched the Facebook page for RedDeer International, and on 26 May we launched the Twitter page for RedDeer International. In the first week of launching both pages, we only obtained no more than 50 followers on both pages. Notwithstanding, the Facebook page had 20,513 followers/likes as of 10 October and 6,941 followers on Twitter. RedDeer International was struggling with gaining page likes on both social networks at the beginning; however, the efforts we made culminated day by day which led to having the number of followers we have nownow. Fumiya started investing his money and time after his arrival back in Japan after studying in the US.

On 7th of June, we launched our Sound Cloud page with our first so called Podcast that explains  differences in values, cultures and societies in the U.S, Japan and the Philippines. It was the first time for both of us to publish our voices in public through social media and, to be honest, it was not that smooth-sailing. We struggled to polish and improve the quality of contents for Soundcloud. As a result, the very first publication on the platform ended up sounding like just kids playing around.

RedDeer International has 12 pages on WordPress, including our main website, However, it started with only this one page.  The topics you can find on the site are: Politics, People, History, Environment, Economy, Travel, Podcast, Music, Culture, Job, Life, and our main topic “Nations” as of 10 October 2014.

3. Why RedDeer International?

RedDeer International was founded by 21 year-old Fumiya Akashika after his experiences of being an exchange student in the U.S twice and meeting people from around the world who had different values, cultures and ideas. He attracted people not only around his age but also those who are older than him through a non-stop perseverance.

The main point is that RedDeer International is not a group of professionals in writing, but a group of those who are young and passionate about spreading their ideas and interests around the world. That is why writers can write whatever they want to write based on their interests without any restrictions. For the most part, our articles are fun and thought provoking to read. There is no burden for writers when it comes to voicing their inner voices to the world.

Another unique quality of RedDeer is the attractiveness and freshness of our articles. We do not have any particular types of format in writing: we have articles that range from being based in research to being based in unique personal experience. As you read through some of the articles, you can feel a certain energy in the writing that we believe makes RedDeer unique.

Finally, RedDeer is an international platform run by the youth of today. It is not a platform tied with conservative and old-dated ideas that you can see everywhere on other news-based websites. We are the ones who will create business and explore the world in the next era of history. Our viewpoints come from a wide variety of backgrounds, giving a globally minded perspective of the world.

5.Introduction to RedDeer International Branches

RedDeer International so far has 12 branches. Each one of the branches provides news and information that spices up your life and is fun to read that are connected to the other branches: RedDeer International, RDI Culture, RDI History, RDI Great People, RDI Economy, RDI Entertainment, RDI Politics, RDI Podcast, RDI Music, RDI Life, RDI Travel,RDI Job and RDI English Learning. Each one of them has a purpose just like any other website. We would like to introduce a few of them for beginners of RedDeer International.

1.RedDeer International (Main Webpage) Nations Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 2.59.36 AM

The purpose of this Website is to let readers get to know about nations before reading any news articles. It is one thing to just read and look over any kind of articles, but it is another thing to know about the nations first and read news articles relevant to the nation/country. It is better to know about the country before you read news about the country! It will give you some hints of what, why and how with regards to the country of interest.

RedDeer International (Main Webpage) Nations is full of content that is written by those who have been to the countires or were born in the specific coutnry. For Instance, I have been to the U.S. and Dominican Republic before and I was born in Japan, so if I were to write about nations here, I would only write about Japan, the U.S and Dominican Republic since I know what it feels like to be there. We are hoping that this will inspire richer and more fruitful articles.

Here is a sample article on RedDeer International Nations: Japan

However, if you are thinking about going abroad or doing business outside of your home country, you can not avoid the situation where you have to make business conversation or small talk. To make it smooth, you need to know at least where the people of a particular country are coming from. Culture is based on characteristics, personalities, attitudes, and most importantly inherent qualities found within a person.

RedDeer International Culture is mostly mix of research and experiences of member’s through interactions with others with diverse background. If anything comes up in our minds, any questions form as we ponder cultures, then we will certainly write about it.

Here is a sample article of RedDeer International Culture: Why do people Discriminate?

3.RedDeer International history   Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 3.15.34 AM

The purpose of this website is to provide  astonishing and inconceivable facts of history. There is proverb that goes “History will repeat itself“. It is true in all expects. World War II took place even though all the leaders (most of) assembled and established the U.N out of regret of causing WWI. Mankind surely learned some lessons and tried not to conduct such a blunder again. The bottom line is that it does not matter where you were born and come from; events happened in history all over the world and contain valuable lessons for all of us. You can apply them to your life.

Here is a sample article of RedDeer International History: 69 years has past since the world war 2 ended

Following Your Dreams is Like Following the Video Game Fairy

Have you ever played a video game that has a little fairy that guides you around, showing you the next level and offering clues on how to beat the boss? Your dreams and life purpose are like that video game fairy; they appear at the corners of your consciousness, whispering faint words of advice and lighting the way to your destiny.

Always be aware of the fairy in your life; you can call it whatever: your inner voice, your intuition, your purpose; every person has the opportunity to walk the yellow brick road to success, reaching their highest potential.
Anything worth having isn’t going to be easy. The yellow brick road to success isn’t exactly straight—it’s an expressway full of mountains and potholes, struggles waiting at every corner and people to pick up along the way. You might not know now exactly where you need to be but you need to at least start somewhere and start putting action into your life. You don’t need to be great to start but you need to start to be great.
#specialtrick I am about to reveal a special trick that can help you find what your true calling is and what you should be focusing your energy on. Think of the thing in the world that you would love to do but don’t think you can really make a living out of, something that doesn’t seem financially promising, something you would do on the side with a stable day job. That thing, whether it’s music, comedy, gardening, home décor, or cooking, is most likely your true calling. The world may make it difficult for you to do what you love, but hey—anything worth having isn’t going to be easy.

Clear your head and go after that passion: be fearless, work hard, be honest.

Top 5 Riots of 2014

What is going on in today’s world and what events and trends shape this generation? On one side, there are amazing things happening in technology and globalization: social media, medicine and an ever-interconnected world. On the other side of the card exists an unbearable buzz of conflict and social upheaval, a dark cloud that shrouds our daily news. Everywhere we turn, television and social media are flooded with images of violence and international conflict caused by RIOTS. The world is changing rapidly with technology and globalization; however, these swift changes are conjuring internal discords within the microcosms of our interconnected global civilization. Clashing ideologies– varying from politics, religion and economics–are bringing human civilization to a breaking point. As the masses continue to challenge the status quo, riots are becoming the identifying theme in our time in history.

Today’s Top 5 Riots
5. Hong Kong
The free-market city-state of Hong Kong exploded this month when student activists swarmed the streets, protesting mainland China’s influence in the upcoming 2017 elections. Known by several hashtags: #umbrellaprotests, #HKDemocracy and #OccupyCentral, the civil disobedience commenced when the tenth session of the Standing Committee in the twelfth National People’s Congress set limits for the 2016 Legislative Council election and 2017 Chief Executive election. Class boycotts soon followed, leading to the largest protest in Hong Kong since 1997.
4. Venezuela
After years of dystopian conditions: extreme corruption, violence, inflation and authoritative abuse, discontent Venezuelan students took their mode of anarchy to the streets, varying from peaceful protests: sit-ins and hunger strikes, to full out mob confrontations with the armed forces. The internal civil unrest, propelled by rampant corruption and government mismanagement, has caused dozens of deaths and thousands of arrests and injuries.
3. Syria
Currently one of the world’s major conflicts, the Syrian Civil War started brewing in 2011, when citizens protesting President Bashar Al-assad’s government were met with violent responses from government armed forces. The Syrian protests started when the Assad government, a camp that promised social reform and progression towards democracy, failed to live up to their promises—abuse of human rights, ethnic inequality and economic inequality continued.  After three years of military conflict, over 100,000 lives have been claimed and 6.5 million people have been displaced.
Mideast Syria
2. Ukraine
Decades of intense political history with Russia and Europe are finally coming to a boiling point as Ukraine experiences demonstrations across dozens of cities. The pro-Russian versus pro-European opposition came to a head when then President Victor Yanukovych signed a treaty with Russia, dissolving relations with the European Union and inciting tension from numerous Ukrainian ethnic groups. The violent revolution ultimately lead to the exile of President Victor Yanukovych; as protesters and armed forces alike lit cities ablaze.
1. Israel/Gaza
And the number 1 spot goes to….yup, you guessed it, the decades’ long conflict that has had the pulse of the world for most of modern media—Isarel/Gaza. The story of the 2014 internal unrest surrounds a volley of bombs between Israeli forces and the Hamas, a Palestinian ethnic group. The situation worsened when three Israeli teenagers were allegedly kidnapped by Hamas operatives, leading to increased bombardment by Israeli militia. Air strikes and ground invasions from both sides have caused many deaths and injuries to civilians, leading to international political controversies that are lighting social media ablaze.
Although the reality looks grim, some would say the outlook is bright—ordinary citizens standing up for their rights, taking action and bringing change. Despite the violence and losses, I consider this spirit of riot a special component to our time.

Top 8 Tips for Living in the Now

The present is the most precious thing there is in the universe. Don’t let the world tell you that success is anything but a successful moment.

1. Take responsibility
If you find yourself in an intolerable situation, remove yourself from it, change it or accept it. If you want to take responsibility for your life, you must choose 1 of those 3 options. Focus on your immediate surroundings; use your senses; look at what is in front of you right now. Be content in the present moment, circumstances and environment.

2. Always say yes to the present moment.
Accept the present moment, then act. Whatever the universe presents to you in the moment, accept it as if you had chosen it; always work with it and not against it.

3. Live, learn, adapt, and grow
Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. Realizing this, use it to undergo unpleasant or unexpected moments by experiencing its totality and growing. Hard times are meant to refine your consciousness, propelling it forward and shaping it to reach its highest potential.

4. Lighten Up
Don’t take life too seriously! Just lighten up. More often than not, your worries and anxieties stem from an unstable and an unbalanced mind–caused internally as opposed to externally. Careers, relationships, money, school: all these trivial things are values that society forces onto your consciousness. The most important thing in life is happiness; so, learn to let go and experience happiness. Happiness is not something you create; it is something you let into your life. Think of light: it is not something you create but something you open your window to, allowing the sun to illuminate your home.

5. Realize That Love is Not Outside of You
Love is a state of being; it is not outside, but rather, deep within you. You can never lose it. Life gets messy, sometimes covering and burying your innate ability to activate the state of love. Make a habit of regularly cleansing your internal being, which purifies karma that accumulates in your consciousness. Just as you clean a room regularly as dust clutters, you must clear the clutter in your consciousness.

6. Strip Negativity Immediately
The more you dwell on the negative, the more obsessed you become with it. Negativity can start as something minuscule and insignificant; but if left unattended, it can manifest into something debilitating and oppressive: guilt, anxiety, anger and depression. Regularly identify and recognize negative thoughts and entities in your consciousness before they manifest in your mind and actions.

7. Complain Less
When you complain, you make yourself a victim; to complain is non-acceptance of what is. It is the nature of the mind to complain, but not the nature of the soul. Learn how to dissociate the mind from the being, separating the permanent entity that accepts all circumstances from the reactive mind that is deluded by the senses.

8. See Things as for the First Time
This one pretty similar to the first way. But it can be useful when you have a hard time just observing your surroundings.

That’s when you can look at things as for the first time. Imagine it like that, take that role. Like someone who has never experienced this before. Like a child or someone who has never been here before. I like this one and I have been doing it from time to time for years (although back then I didn’t really understand why it felts nice when I did it).
